This is who I am in the world….

I am the Founder of the PKP Centre- Pusat Kegiatan Perempuan- The centre for women’s activities, which I began in 2013. I had previously begun a school in 2008 for children with special needs, which is now run by another “Ibu Sari”.

My name, Sari Ati, means “essence of the heart/love/someone to be loved”.

The school was the first step, the feet. PKP, the women’s centre, was the neck/voice and now the community centre that I am building is the head.

I am the amazing Ibu sari- or OM-azing Ibu Sari. I am the neck of the world. In our Hindu philosophy, there is a philosophy called TRI ANGGA – where the body is divided into three parts- this is a fundamental piece of Balinese architecture, or guidelines. I am a Christian woman - a child of God. I know who I am; I come from the Most High King and for that reason, I know my role and purpose in this world. I can say this because I did not always know my identity or purpose, and it took me a while to understand this. I am happily married to Robert for almost 30 years, and a proud mom to my son Phillip (23) and daughter Kiana (27).

I went through sexual trauma in my teen years which is why it took some time to accept who I am and process my brokenness. Once I realised that I was worthy of love and that I could be healed, I came out to speak and advocate. I am a woman: I am resilient. I am courageous. I am a warrior. 1. Who am I in the world?

I am the oldest sister with two younger brothers, and I am a mother of a beautiful 16-year-old teenage girl. I have fought for my life, to live as a mother and for my daughter’s living. I love to help my friends, who also fight for their living. I started work when I was 17 years old, working in a hotel and doing marketing for an insurance company. I have also been a Personal Assistant for the Director of a mining company, a chiropractic company, an oil and gas company and a travel company.

I stopped this work as I learned what I really desire to do. I love fashion and I love to dress up. My mum used to make and sew dresses when I was a little kid and I used to help her by doing small things to help her complete the job faster. With my help, we could sew hundreds of dresses in two weeks.

I know that I am a good listener as my friends, my relatives and my colleagues come to me, sharing stories about themselves. They are happy to talk and share their problems with me. I am an entertainer too. I was a professional singer at a young age and would perform on stage and at weddings and I was so happy. Sometimes I miss being on stage. I ask myself the question of why I don’t do it anymore, and sometimes it’s about the opportunity not seemingly being there. For now, it’s just for fun, rather than a career.

•I'm a dancer, dance teacher and choreographer. I started to dance when I was five years old. My parents brought me to a dance course to learn Indonesian traditional dance. I started performing on stage when I was 6 years old and since then, I have never stopped dancing.

Dance has built my character, self-confidence, pride, happiness and I can express my feelings even when I feel sad and down. My feelings then become my inspiration to create movement.

I went to a dance company in Jakarta and learned to be a professional dancer for 4 years, and I then studied and trained to get my certificates as a dance teacher. I then moved to Bali to start my life from the very beginning, and to start my dancing career from scratch.

I am director/principle/instructor at Entwined Bellydance & Yoga, established in 2009. I started learning bellydance in 2005 not long after I moved to Melbourne, and began performing in 2006 with a student troupe, then professionally in 2009. I taught the odd workshop from 2010 onwards, but started teaching consisten weekly classes in Melbourne in 2013, and online in 2020/21. In the past few years I have also completed pilates and yoga teacher trainings.
