This is who I am in the world:
I am a Christian woman - a child of God. I know who I am; I come from the Most High King and for that reason, I know my role and purpose in this world. I can say this because I did not always know my identity or purpose, and it took me a while to understand this. I am happily married to Robert for almost 30 years, and a proud mom to my son Phillip (23) and daughter Kiana (27).
I went through sexual trauma in my teen years which is why it took some time to accept who I am and process my brokenness. Once I realised that I was worthy of love and that I could be healed, I came out to speak and advocate. I am a woman: I am resilient. I am courageous. I am a warrior. I am here for a reason and to use what I went through for the glory of my Creator, to use my story to help others. I know what I stand for.
I am definitely the change that I wish to see and I believe this because it is what I do in my community. I mentor a lot of young adults and empower them in their brokenness so that they do not feel alone. I'm a community mom. I offer them permission to reach out in some way and to express themselves. I have been there and I want them to know there is someone there to speak to, which I didn't have, and they can then make this available for the next person who needs support.
The story I would like rewritten for women:
I want women to speak up with confidence even when their voice shakes, on whatever topic and with whoever the person is. It doesn't have to be about trauma. I want them to voice their opinion. This can be hard because of society's standards. I desire for women to close their eyes and speak their truth until the world hears them. I want women to know that we are so powerful and it is so important to empower one another.
We must be ready to empower the next woman. It doesn't matter who she is; we have to be ready to take off our hats and be so grateful to know her. We are strong when we empower one another. This is the epitome of how we utilise our power and gifts, rather than tearing one another down. We are stronger together and therefore can move mountains.
This is the story I am next writing for myself:
My next story is to take my brokenness and to turn it into beauty through my upcoming non-profit organization, Healing Xchange, Inc. (launching soon). I am going to use what I went through and help strengthen others who have endured childhood and/or sexual trauma by sharing their stories. The vision of my nonprofit is based on the Bible verse Isaiah 53:5 "By His wounds we are healed."
I was a child sexual abuse victim and it took me time to understand that I did not do anything wrong and I was not “dirty.” I want Healing Xchange, Inc. to be a safe space for survivors to achieve the same realization and share their stories to help others. I currently serve alongside organizations who fight against child sexual abuse, human/sex trafficking, and promote mental health awareness. With this, my story continues.
