From: Born in Jamaica and left when I was age six, then raised in Canada, and later moved to Orlando, Florida.
This is who I am in the world: I'm a God-fearing women, a 22-year Breast Cancer Survivor that's a strong warrior of hope & courage. I'm also a woman that was born from many mixed cultures. My great grandmother from Bangladesh, great grandfather Jamaican, grandmother Arabic Indian, grandfather Scottish, mother Jamaican, and father Costa Rican, and a bit of Chinese in the family. I am proud of my blended cultures. With that said, who would have thought I would be born on March 8th, which is International Women’s Day, and March is Women's History Month.
Coming from a diverse culture, I'm able to walk in the shoes of many women, because I understand their culture. At a young age, I moved to Pennsylvania, USA, who experienced bullying from high kids that constantly teased & culturally discriminated me because of how I spoke with my accent that's a cross between a Jamaican and Canadian, and someone they couldn't identified or weren't used to seeing a mixed girl like myself. I would often feel like an outsider & go home and crying. My mother would say, when they don't understand, you have to educate them about the richness of your culture. People have a tendency to judge a book by its cover and not read content of the story. I've learned over the years many don't know their own culture or try to embrace it in fear of being embarrassed or shunt away from not being accepted in society. Who I am to the world is a misunderstood woman, who wants to share her culture, and others to inspire women like myself to be proud of who they are, and their culture.
A story I would like to rewrite for women: I created my Women of Kulture band in 2016, to help women like myself in navigating from a world where they're unable to fully embrace their beautiful culture. Being a survivor of bullying, domestic violence, and cancer. I want the next woman to have the opportunity to feel free to speak her truth with her cultural accent in her community, and be loved. It's time we use our voices to paint a portrait of strong amazing beautiful queen's.
My Women of Kulture celebrates & honor women from all cultures worldwide, by sharing stories of obstacles we've overcome, achievements, being an advocate, community leaders, life coaches, mentors, entrepreneurs, in all that we do. In 2022, my magazine theme is "Women Rising and Reaching Back," to not forget the next woman behind us. We share the message that we support one another and not tear each another down. We are a community of sisterhood
#mysisterskeeper. If one of us succeeds, we all celebrate her achievement. We have to remove the jealousy, and hate, to maintain unity of the sisterhood. If you're not achieving to your full potential, check
#self first and get to the root of the problem. Tearing down the next woman, will not allow yourself to see your own true gifts, it rather blocks all your blessings of what you could've become.
As part of Women of Kulture, I created G.L.O.W. 365 = Greater Level Of Wellness to help women to focus on how they can live healthy, by shifting the negative self-talk so they can heal to mental wellness, and have a positive mindset, find happiness within. As a Certified Life, Health & Nutrition Coach, I want to encourage women to make, meet and exceed goals in both their personal & professional lives. I used my success as a 22-year Breast Cancer Survivor and a health advocate to launch my Ribbons of Survivors 365 in 2014, to inform the public of how to strive, thrive, survivor in spite of various chronic illnesses and conditions.
This is the next story I'm writing for myself: To become a best-selling author, in sharing my story on how I continue to strive, thrive and survive in all that I do. I have a second chance in life and I am utilizing it to the fullest and help as many I can. I have learned to appreciate life and the blessings I’ve received. I want to share who I am, to help the next individual no matter what they are going through, nor they're cultural heritage. I will also use my online publication,
KUOMagazine.com, founded in 2008, as a community liaison to bring awareness to the diverse cultures throughout State of Florida and Worldwide. My mission to inspire women to unapologetically love themselves, let the voices be heard, and create a thriving environment where they can equality be honored and appreciated as beautiful amazing queens.
My motto: I am a giver of life, the heart and soul of my family. I'm an open book, because I'm not defined by the color of my skin, the texture of my hair, nor how I speak with my cultural accent or attire. I define who I am, who I want to be, and how I want people to see me, when I stand tall in my community, in my faith, and most of all in my culture as a beautiful creation of God. I am a Women of Kulture 365 in all that I do.
